Wednesday we left Napa mid-morning and headed towards San Francisco via Marin County. The rain had stopped and the sun was coming out. We stopped briefly in San Rafael for coffee and soon crossed the Golden Gate Bridge (sorry, no photos) as the fog was just creeping into San Francisco Bay. We made our way to the house of an old friend, Jeanne Dorward, who lives in the city near the Forrest Hill district. We spent the afternoon talking and then went out to an Indian restaurant for great food.
Thursday morning we took the MUNI, San Francisco’s metro system, to the Embarcadero and saw the restored Ferry Building with chic food vendors in and around the building. The day was clear, sunny, and soon became very warm – a most unusual June day for San Francisco. We walked along the waterfront and took photos of the Oakland Bay Bridge. Shortly we had lunch at a nice seafood restaurant before taking the metro back to Jeanne’s car. Then we drove to the de Young Museum in Golden Gate Park and took the elevator up into the new viewing tower there. We had great views of the western part of San Francisco.
We drove back to Jeanne’s house where we packed up and headed south after our good-bye to Jeanne and her cats. We made our way to Millbrae, where we lived in 1970-72, and tried to find our old apartment with no luck. I believe they were torn down for urban renewal projects. So we made our way to Half Moon Bay where we took scenic California highway 1 south through Santa Cruz to Monterey where we checked into a hotel for the night.
We had a great dinner and good time at the Monterey Fish House restaurant, just a short walk from our hotel. It was jam packed and the hostess said we had at least a 30 minute wait or we could eat at the bar, which we did. We started off with draft Anchor Steam beer and had fun conversations since everyone was friendly and chatted freely. Finally we had a delicious meal of sole (me) and snapper (Rita) along with a fume blanc that tasted nice.
Tomorrow we explore Monterey, Carmel-by-the-Sea, Big Sur, and San Simeon.
