The highway from Zion to Kanab, Arizona, was full of interesting, scenic rock formations and pretty red, pink, and orange colors. From Kanab we took highway 89 east into Arizona once more. The views of colorful buttes, some red with white stripes and some white with red stripes, were great. We drove into Page and had a light lunch then stopped at a tour company to do a tour of Antelope Canyon but today’s tours were all booked. Bummer!
We forgot that Arizona doesn’t go on Daylight Savings Time and tried to check into our motel too early. However, the lady at the desk was nice and helpful. She told me that there are several tour companies for Antelope Canyon but that we could drive there ourselves and save some money by signing up for a tour on location. We drove to Lower Antelope Canyon and only had to wait for a few moments before our tour began at 1:00 pm. The canyon is on the Navajo Nation lands and our guide was a comical young man named Tellman. He played his flute at times on the tour and gave us helpful suggestions on how to photograph the canyon.
The canyon was terrific. It is a narrow, sunken sandstone slot canyon carved out by water and wind over many years. The sandstone would take on different colors depending on location and sunlight from above. It was a fairly difficult walk with a narrow path going up and down and plenty of places to trip.
After Antelope Canyon we drove to scenic lookout points to view Glen Canyon, the dam, and Lake Powell. Finally we returned to our hotel and checked in.
Tomorrow the Grand Canyon.
